I live in Orangeburg, South Carolina in the USA and have the priviledge -- make that the honor-- of being personal friends with Hugo Sims (as you in Holland knew him, Lt. Hugo Sims, CO of the "Incredible Patrol"
, at church for the last 25 years of his life (he died in July of 2004). I spent countless days in interviewing Hugo to write his story of WW II. His recounting of his work in that war was filled with how impressed he was with the people he met there. In interviews with Hugo, his memory of facts and details was amazing. Sadly, in the interviews for "The Incredible Patrol" published in Life magazine, the original author talked with everyone on the patrol EXCEPT Lt. Sims (who was back at Division seeing the dentist) and his recounting of the patrol was never told. At least the full story is now known and the book will be released this year. I am proud to be the person who wrote his story. The Dutch will be pleased to know Hugo had a beautiful family (one daughter and two sons), came home and became a lawyer, was elected to the US House of representatives, owned a very successful investment company and retired to a peaceful life here in Orangeburg. At his funeral was an honor guard, a twenty one-gun salute, and the most horrendous thunder and lightning storm with rain coming down in buckets. Thank you for remembering him and the brave men of the 501st who served alongside Hugo. My best wishes to all of you, those who served and those of you who suffered.
What a wonderful organization to honor the men who jumped. I am anxious to see them in a few years.
